After years of uncertainty over the future of one of football’s most iconic stadiums, San Siro’s demolition date is drawing ever closer.

Milan and Inter are currently moving ahead with plans to build a brand new shared stadium in Milan, with work currently expected to begin demolition of the San Siro in 2031, once both clubs have moved into the new arena.

Milan and Inter have been favorites on all UK betting sites for many years, especially during their Serie A title-winning campaigns and Champions League runs.

When will San Siro be demolished?

According to current redevelopment plans, the demolition of San Siro will take place sometime after the new stadium opens during the 2030-31 season.

Construction of the replacement stadium is expected to begin in 2027 on land adjacent to the current San Siro site. Once the new venue is fully operational, work will begin on demolition of large parts of the existing stadium.

Despite constant speculation over the past few years, the stadium will continue to host matches between Milan and Inter until the new ground is completed.

Why would Milan and Inter demolish San Siro?

The two Serie A clubs believe that San Siro is no longer economically competitive compared to modern stadiums across Europe.

The stadium remains one of the oldest venues in world football, but both clubs have repeatedly argued that renovations would be too expensive and commercially restrictive compared to building a new arena from scratch.

Plans for a new stadium were first floated in 2019, but the project faced delays due to political opposition, heritage concerns and disagreements over whether San Siro should be renovated.

However, recent developments have significantly accelerated that process and both clubs are now fully committed to the demolition and reconstruction project.

Will San Siro be completely demolished?

Not everything at San Siro will be destroyed. Current proposals suggest that parts of the stadium’s iconic façade could remain as part of the redeveloped public spaces surrounding the new stadium.

However, it is expected that the seating bowl and most of the interior sections will be demolished once Milan and Inter move to their new home.

San Siro demolition date timeline

As it stands, the expected timeline is:

2027: Construction of new stadium begins 2030-31: New stadium scheduled to open 2031 and beyond: Demolition of San Siro begins

Until then, fans still have a few seasons left to visit one of soccer’s most legendary stadiums before the famous San Siro skyline is finally changed forever.
