Jean Piero Gasperini reveals that Mateo Letegui is giving Atalanta a special gift after breaking the club’s record in a 3-2 victory over Genoa, but to discuss his future, “now is not the right moment.”
I didn’t play much for Marasi. Both teams were ready to celebrate reaching targets in at least two rounds.
Andrea Pinamonty had the Griffon placed twice before, making the most of the chaos defense, as Ibrahim Slemana and Daniel Maldini raw them every time.
The winner sparked controversy as Genoa wanted to stop playing when Coni de Winter fell with a cramp, but the move was already far beyond him in the middle, and Letegi didn’t even know that he was injured.
“I don’t get into it because there’s footage so everyone can see and judge. Fortunately, we didn’t get into that here, but my players didn’t realize he was down,” Gasperini told Dazen.
Gasperini reveals Retegui’s pledge
“Retegui had an extraordinary season. He wanted to not score in this situation, but he also scored on his right foot, left and head thanks to the team’s contributions. His goal was decisive for our campaign.”
The goal means Retegui set a new club record and beat Pippo Inzaghi’s 24-goal tally in Atalanta’s one Serie A season.
“Now Retegui has to pay for dinner. Take me and all of his teammates with me!”
Atalanta also scored a new club record with 13 away wins and scored 42 points on their trip. One of his total 23 victories in the season, one off the highest 16 clean sheets.
Was Gasperini asked if he preferred to stay a little longer in the scadette race than the 16 round playoffs, or if he wanted to go further into the Champions League?
“It was easy to do worse than this, I don’t know how good we can do,” he shrugged.
“You need to look at the table. You can play two rounds from the end without any concerns and look at the club behind Atalanta with budget, enthusiasm and experience.”
Gasperini is locked tight in the future of Atalanta
Inevitably, he had questions about his future on a contract that expired in June 2026, and although he had no intention of signing an extension, he declined to comment.
“This is not the right moment to talk about it. We are ready to finish the season in front of our fans. These campaigns should be stylish and celebrated. There was no similar outcome as they were no longer home, but the fans have always been very enthusiastic.
“Atalanta is in the Champions League for the fifth time in the last seven years. Perhaps the Europa League is better.”
This is because Atalanta won the Europa League and lifted the trophy in 2024, beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the final.
