Gianluca Zambrotta says he will soon begin a “experimental project” to develop young Italian players, claiming that Gennaro Gattuso is the right alternative to Luciano Spalletti.

Italian World Cup winner Zambrotta will join 2006 teammate Simone Perotta and former Italian coach Cesare Prandelli on a new project launched by Figc to take advantage of the potential of the young Italian player.

“I will work with Cesare Prandelli and Simone Perrotta, along with Maurizio Vissidi, Club Italia, the Technical Department, Youth and School Department,” Zambrotta told Gazzetta.

“Our goal is to help young players grow. We will meet in the coming weeks to lay the foundation for an experimental project that will benefit from the opinions and support of everyone.”

Gattuso was announced earlier this week as the new Italian coach.

“Appointing Gatuso as head coach, taking on a leadership role and serving as Bonucci on Reno’s staff is aimed at rekindling enthusiasm, attachment to shirts and a sense of belonging,” Zambrotta said.

“It’s important to restore the value of the national team’s call-up. Even if I get injured when I play, I’ll still go to the Coverciano and if possible brush my teeth and play.

“I care about him (Gatuso) and I respect him. He has great value and can be the right person to help us achieve our goals.

“At this point, the right decision has been made.”

Zambrotta, a former teammate in 2006, continued his talk about his fellow World Cup winners.

“He’s very careful and meticulous. With him, you work hard physically and tactically.

“He needs to remain faithful to himself. He needs to be clear, transparent, direct and take over his love for Azuri’s shirt.”

Gatuso will make his debut in the World Cup qualifying round against Estonia on September 5th.

“It was getting more difficult (to qualify for the World Cup) as I was exhausted by the Norwegian side, who was playing at full speed,” Zambrotta said.

“I hope to see another Italy in September. Reno doesn’t have much time, but as long as I recover my enthusiasm, my opponents are within reach.

“We need to rebuild the group that we enjoy being together. The only purpose is that the playoffs are difficult, so perhaps they have to be directly qualified for the World Cup.”

Finally, the 48-year-old also sent a message to Azzurri players. “It’s an honor to play for a national team. The Azzurri shirt must be defended and respected at all times.”
