Here’s our mid-season verdict on all 11 Italian players currently playing in the Premier League.
1. Sandro Tonali (Newcastle United) – 8/10
It hasn’t been the ideal start for Newcastle, winning just two of their seven Premier League games so far, but Tonali has been one of their top performers so far. Of all the players who have played at least 600 minutes this season, only Elliott Anderson, Bruno Fernandes, Tijani Rejnders and Dominik Szoboszlai have completed more passes in the final third than Tonali’s 102.
Although he didn’t have much help around him, it was only a matter of time before Tonali’s efforts started to pay off.
2. Destiny Udogi (Tottenham Hotspur) – 6/10
Destiny Udogi missed the opening game of the season with a knee injury, but returned to the starting XI for three games in a row, securing his spot at left-back under manager Thomas Frank. He has yet to make a big impact so far, but the international break could be Udogie’s chance to get back to full speed.

3. Gianluigi Donnarumma (Manchester City) – 8/10
Donnarumma has adapted well to Josep Guardiola’s system, conceding just two goals in four games. He still has some room to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, but he is shaping up to be a huge success story. Donnarumma is not in high demand due to City’s strong defensive unit, but he showed his shot-stopping ability in the 1-0 win over Brentford.
4. Riccardo Calafioli (Arsenal) – 8/10
Calafioli has established himself as Arteta’s first-choice left-back this season and has impressed with his blend of attacking intent and defensive awareness. Only Ebelesi Eze and Victor Gokeres have taken more shots than Calafioli in Arsenal’s side this season, but he is also a difficult player to beat in a Gunners defense that has kept four clean sheets.
5. Guglielmo Vicario (Tottenham Hotspur) – 9/10
According to the analyst, no goalkeeper in the Premier League has prevented more goals than Guglielmo Bicaro’s 2.9. Only David Raya has a higher save percentage, but Vicaro has a whopping 24 total saves compared to the Spaniard’s 15. He is a big reason why Tottenham are in third place with just five goals conceded.
6. Wilfried Gunondt (Leeds United) – 5/10
Gnont has yet to find the form he showed last season, helping Leeds win promotion to the Premier League. Although his playing opportunities have been limited due to a calf injury, he is expected to return after the international break and is hoping to make his mark this season.
7. Giovanni Leoni (Liverpool) – N/A
The teenager fell into despair after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament on his debut for Liverpool in the Carabao Cup against Southampton. Leoni will miss this season and almost certainly miss next summer’s World Cup.
8. Michael Cayode vs (Brentford) – 6/10
Keiode, who plays for struggling Brentford, is one of the standout defenders, winning more tackles and ground duels than any of his team-mates. The 21-year-old has yet to show a real attacking threat despite playing as a wing-back, but Keith Andrews may be keen to see more of that after the international break.

9. Federico Chiesa (Liverpool) – 8/10
Given his sporadic playing time last season, he’s one of the surprise packages this season. Chiesa has scored some important goals for Liverpool this season and quickly established himself as a fan favorite. He’s knocking on the door for a starting spot in the Premier League.
10. Nicolo Savona (Nottingham Forest) – 6/10
Despite being a regular for Juventus last season, Savona has struggled to break into Forest’s squad as he continues to adapt to the Premier League. However, manager Ange Postecoglou, who started on the right side of the back five against Newcastle before the international break, may prefer him. The 22-year-old is expected to get more playing time as we head into the holiday season.
11. Diego Coppola (Brighton) – 6/10
Diego Coppola made his debut for Italy just a few months ago after a successful spell at Hellas Verona, but he has struggled to break into Brighton’s squad since arriving in the transfer window. He has only made two substitute appearances in the Premier League, but has looked solid in the cup, starting in two matches against Oxford United and Barnsley.
