Turkish Football Federation president Ibrahim Hasiosmanoglu has confirmed that Italian coach Vincenzo Montella will not resign or be fired following the 2026 World Cup debacle.
Tolkier was expected to be one of the dark horses for competitions in the United States, Canada and Mexico, but was a huge disappointment.
They lost 0-2 to Australia in the opening game of the tournament, and lost 1-0 to Paraguay, who had 10 players in the second half.
This resulted in the elimination of the team that included Kenan Yildiz and Hakan Calhanoglu, making the result of the final group match against the USA a complete waste.
Montella receives criticism as Tolkier coach
The disastrous results have led to calls for Montella to resign or be fired, despite having only recently signed a new contract until July 2028.
However, Turkish Football Federation President Hasios Manoglu calmed the controversy by speaking to reporters before practice.
“Everyone is heartbroken because it wasn’t the ambition we had for this World Cup. But the 85 million people of our beloved country should know that everyone has worked hard here and is just as sad as they are.”
“Let’s not forget that it’s ‘Our Boys’ who brought us here. Most of them are around 20 years old and will probably play in three or four more tournaments over the next few years. They are our kids and we need to support them.”
“We support the coach, we support the players. This is not a club team, but even there failures occur due to lack of consistency. You can’t fire 15 players and bring in 15 more, you can’t change the coach to another team.”
“The media has written the names of various coaches over the last two days, but anyone who knows our character should understand that we will never replace the people we found along the way with the people we found.
“If this coaching staff and these players are successful in two years, we will support them.”
Montella joined the Turkiye national team in September 2023 and enjoyed considerable success overall, reaching the quarter-finals of EURO 2024 and qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
President Hasios Manoglu cut off any conversation when asked if Montella’s resignation had ever been discussed.
“I didn’t give him a chance to say it. We didn’t have that conversation and there’s no need to give him a chance to say it anyway. If you’re the president, you need to understand the psychology of both players and coaches. You need to understand the psychology of both players and coaches.”
“We have to support them, not drag them into this situation.”
Italian Montella’s total record on the Torchie bench is 20 wins, 5 draws, and 10 losses.
