According to reports in Italy, Roma are willing to increase their current offer for Mason Greenwood, but it is a race against time to seal the deal with Marseille, who must raise the funds by the end of this month to comply with FFP regulations.

Roma’s position in negotiations to acquire Greenwood

Roma have been targeting former Manchester United forward Greenwood for several weeks and the latest update is that they have reached an agreement in principle with the 24-year-old on personal terms for a starting salary of €4.5 million per season, with the possibility of annual salary increases.

However, as things stand, Roma have not yet reached an agreement with Marseille. According to reports in Italy, Marseille value the English player at between €50 million and €55 million, while the Giallorossi have made an offer of €40 million, comprising an initial loan fee of €5 million, a transfer fee of €25 million and a guaranteed bonus of €10 million.

According to Thursday’s report, Corriere dello SportRoma are prepared to increase their offer to 45 million euros including bonuses.

Marseille, on the other hand, will need to sell players in order to raise funds to comply with FFP regulations. Rome itself learned that on Wednesday. If they fail to comply with the terms of the FFP settlement agreement, they will be fined 6 million euros. However, the situation is even more dire for Marseille, with the club risking being excluded from UEFA competitions for the next three years if they do not raise the funds by the end of June.

From a budgeting perspective, it is important to remember that if Marseille were to sell a big-name player like Greenwood, they would be able to credit the full capital gain to their account for this season. On the other hand, if Roma were to sign Greenwood, they would be able to spread the cost of his acquisition over the years of the player’s contract in the club’s account.

Roma hope Marseille’s funding deadline will play into their hands and the French side could be forced to lower their offer in the coming days.

There are also suggestions that Atletico Madrid are also interested in signing Greenwood this summer, so pressure remains on Roma to finalize a deal.
