Former Juventus coach Maurizio Sali has admitted to enjoying watching Thiago Motta’s Bologna last season, so he voted for the former Bianconeri boss at 2023-24 Panchina Doro.

Italian professional league coaches voted for the best manager in 2023-24. The awards ceremony took place on Monday at Caucciano, Florence.

Inter coach Simone Inzagi, the 2003-24 Serie A champion, became the winner of Pancinadro, followed by Fiorentina coaches Giampierogas Perini and Vincentzo Italiano last season.

Sally attended the ceremony and spoke to Sky Sports Italy after the event.

The Italian tactician has not had a club since March 2024, when Igor Tudor replaced him at Lazio.

Ironically, the Croats were appointed as the new boss of Juventus, replacing Thiago Motta.

“It’s always hard to get ideas from the outside. There’s definitely an internal dynamic that we can’t understand,” Sally said of Motta’s dismissal.

“It’s always difficult to evaluate externally. Certainly, some internal dynamics make a difference in some decisions when results don’t arrive.”

Sally was the last Juventus coach to win the Serie A title in 2019-20.

The former Juventus boss revealed that he voted for Thiago Motta for the Pancina Doro Prize.

“It’s a strange prize to refer to 2023-24,” he said.

“We voted eight to nine months after the end of the season, and in the last nine months what happened could lead to another vote, but this is around 2023-24.

“If they voted the day after the end of the season, Thiago Motta would have won. It was around 2023-24 and it was fun to see Bologna.”

Sally also shared his views on the Serie title race.

“I’d be happy if Atalanta stays involved until the end. It’s incredible history and I want to see them there until the end,” he said.

“From the start, there was a sense that Inter and Napoli had more things than the others. Inter is more than Napoli. It’s great that the race is open to the end. Today I was lucky to talk to Antonio Conte. And I was born by Napoli and I was delighted with it.”

Is Sally preparing for her next appointment?

“Like all of us, when we have these periods, we try to keep looking at players, teams, trends and keep updating,” he said.

“That’s normal. I think it’s something we all do when we’re not coaching.”

When will he come back?

“When I got the call, and whether my emotions and strong motivations are right for it,” Sally concluded.
