Ezio Maria Simonelli, president of Lega Serie A, has proposed to play Milan’s match in the US while San Silo undergoes restructuring work next season. “We need to ask UEFA for approval.”

For some major European leagues, it is nothing new to suggest playing some regular season matches in American soil as a way to raise funds and spread interest in overseas products, particularly in the accumulation of the 2026 World Cup, which will be performed in the US, Canada and Mexico.

The Premier League, Lariga and Serie A have all commented on previous possibilities, but Lega’s Chief Simonelli believes they can actually achieve that for a very specific period of time.

“Sansilo will be closed from January 10th to February 8th, so that could be an opportunity to play Inter and Milan overseas,” Simonelli told Panorama magazine.

“The US would be a good option. Of course there are some formal issues, such as asking UEFA to approve it, but I would like to do that.”

Studio Giuseppe Meazza, located in Milan’s San Silo area, will be ready for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, with reconstruction work being carried out in January and February 2026.

This is of course a whole different thing from the work Inter and Milan are pushing for when it comes to stadiums. They want to completely defeat it to give way to a brand new structure that has been effectively built into the current car park.

The project was revealed by UEFA president Alexander Ceferin, who was attending the Champions League semi-finals between Inter and Barcelona this week, claiming to prefer a “more modern” arena.

“I was embarrassed to agree with what Ceferin said about the Italian stadium,” Simonelli added.

“The deficit and lack of vision from politicians meant that only five stadiums were built in Italy during the period of 213 being built around Europe. I have faith in the new Sansilo as local governments are committed to it.

“It’s essential that Inter and Milan have a suitable home to play, like the Bernabéu and other stadiums that are currently separate from our structure.”
