More than a month after his dismissal, Max Allegri finally succeeded in terminating his contract with Milan by mutual agreement and was officially appointed as Napoli’s new manager.

This decision is up in the air and was confirmed by Napoli this morning.

“SSC Napoli would like to welcome Massimiliano Allegri as its new first-team coach. Mr. Allegri has signed a contract with the club until June 30, 2029,” Napoli announced.

“After a long playing career that included a stint with Napoli in the 1997/98 season, Max Allegri began his coaching career with the Arrianese in the 2003/04 season. In 2007/08 he led Sassuolo to promotion to Serie B for the first time in their history, and also won the Serie C1 Super Cup in the same year. A few months later, he made his Serie A managerial debut with Cagliari, finishing the season in second place.” He won the Punchina d’Oro Award in 9th place.

“He joined Milan in 2010 and won his 18th Scudetto and sixth Italian Super Cup. He coached Juventus from 2014 to 2019, winning five consecutive league titles, four consecutive Coppa Italia titles, and two Italian Super Cups. During this period, he led the Bianconeri to the Champions League final twice. After a two-year hiatus, he returned to manage Juventus and won his fifth Coppa title.” Italy in 2024. Last season, he returned to the Milan dugout and finished the season in fifth place.

“A very warm welcome to our new head coach, Max Allegri!”

Allegri was also welcomed by club president Aurelio De Laurentiis in his usual tweet.

Allegri was appointed as Milan’s manager last summer, but was sacked the day after the club finished fourth and missed out on Champions League qualification.

Allegri was sacked, along with sporting director Igli Tare, technical director Geoffrey Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani, as part of a major round-up at the San Siro.

He was able to quickly agree terms with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to replace Antonio Conte, who resigned after two years of winning the Scudetto and Supercoppa Italiana.

However, reaching an agreement with Milan to terminate his existing contract proved difficult as the Rossoneri manager’s management shake-up required weeks of negotiations.

The coach is now free to put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The 58-year-old had two spells at Milan, in 2010-14 and 2025-26, and also had spells at Juventus in 2014-19 and 2021-24.
