Maurizio Sally explains why he returned to Lazio after a devastating year from the field, looking forward to the “disorderly” Nuno Tavares and advises new Italian coach, Gennaro Gattuso.
The coach resigned from Bianco Celesti in March 2024 while he believed he had reached a deadlock with his current team, but returned to Studio Olimpico this summer.

“Bringing back to Lazio is like going home. My fans loved me here,” he told Tuttomercatoweb.
“I’m back to where I finished second, so maybe it wasn’t a wise decision, but it was very easy in terms of emotion. Last year was awful for me.
After Raffaele Palladino resigned, there were reports that Sarri was approached to be taken over by Fiorentina.
“We had very minimal contact, but only after we have already signed Lazio. We will always convey to our hearts the support that Fiorentina fans will show during this difficult time.
Sally returns to another Lazio

The radio has changed since Sally last took the helm, passing through Igor Tudor and Marco Baroni, along with the players he developed.
“After 50 games as a deep playmaker, Lobera said he’s going to be a top player even if he needs to make it a little better. Matteo Gendouzi is an animal and he can’t stop himself at 100%, so he has to chain him up.
“Nuno Tavares is the only unknown defense I’m about to start working with. He’s extremely talented, but disorderly.
Sally’s advice to Italian manager Gatuso

Sally had already joined Lazio when the Italian role was opened with the firing of Luciano Spalletti, so the coach was asked what he could do to improve Nagioner’s fate.
“It’s clearly not working. Two years ago, he was second in the club’s UEFA rankings, and while Nagioneer has an incredible problem this season, it’s third this season. The quality of the club team and Italian performance is a disconnect, even if it’s happening elsewhere.”
Does Sarri have any advice as Gennaro Gattuso will be appointed as the new Azzurri coach?
“I love Gatuso so much, I’ll just tell him this. Let’s make Gatuso, even as an Italian coach, without compromising on the views of football.”
At the club level, Inter reached their second Champions League final in three years, but was wiped out 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain.
“PSG showed courage by removing top players, lowering wage bills and relying on very young players to teach the world of football a lesson. And it took Lionel Messi and Neymar to win the trophy that they failed at this club.”
Looking back on his career, what was Sari’s toughest success?
“Juventus was the hardest team to coach because they were asymmetric. We got the Scudetto thanks to fresh players like Rodrigo Bentanchour. Lazio was there for a long time that season, but we didn’t compete to play every three days, so we always knew it was between us and Inter.”
