Former Juventus manager Fabio Capello has doubts that the Bianconeri will compete for the Serie A title under new manager Luciano Spalletti, saying the old ladies should not “waste” their money in January and only buy “real solutions”.

Spalletti was announced as Juventus’ new manager on Friday, and the Certaldo native said he wanted to be part of this season’s title race.

Juventus currently sit seventh in Serie A, three points off Champions League qualification and six points behind leaders Napoli and Roma.

“Personally I don’t think Juventus are on the same level as Napoli or Inter, but competing for the title is clearly a big challenge for him and for the Bianconeri,” Capello wrote in his latest column for Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I put these two teams among those competing for the Scudetto, but I believe that the most important goal for Juventus is still to qualify for the Champions League.

“But if the Old Lady manages to compete for the title, we will have to praise Spalletti and give him credit for proving once again that he is a great leader and an exceptional motivator.”

Juventus sacked manager Igor Tudor on Monday after three consecutive defeats and an eight-game winless streak, but how can Spalletti make the Bianconeri title contenders this term?

“The question is how,” Capello said.

“For example, through a different formation or through a different approach that allows the players to perform at their best? Let me be clear. Making an effective impact from Wednesday to Saturday is by no means easy for a coach. It is a difficult task and it is important to understand what kind of boost Wednesday’s result and his arrival actually represent, whether temporary or lasting.”

Capello: “Juventus have already wasted enough money”

Finally, Capello gave Juventus and their new manager a transfer proposal: “Juventus will need to understand what reinforcements are available on the market. The important thing is not to waste money on stopgap solutions rather than real solutions. They have already wasted enough money in Turin.”

Spalletti has an eight-month contract, with Juventus having the option to extend until 2027, regardless of Champions League qualification.
