Fiorentina, who were without a coach, suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss away to Mainz in stoppage time in the conference league, failing to take an early lead thanks to Simon Soum’s goal.
Viola sacked manager Stefano Pioli on Tuesday after they managed just three draws in their opening 10 matches in Serie A, and promoted Daniele Garoppa from their youth team as interim manager while a new manager is decided. They had only one win in nine Bundesliga games, but like Mainz, they won both of their conference league games. Robin Gosens and Tariq Lamptey were absent, while Maxim Reitsch, Maxim Dar and Anthony Kasi were absent for the hosts.
See how it all unfolded in our live blog.

Nineteen-year-old goalkeeper Tommaso Martinelli made his season debut, heading home a free from Nelson Wiper from six yards out. Then, before anyone else was ready, Armindo Schieve fired a dangerous ball into the front of the goal.
After this scare, it was Fiorentina who broke the flow of the match. Roberto Piccoli took a shot and Simon Soum scored his first goal from outside the box near the goal.

Piccoli wasted several promising moves, one going over the edge and another hitting the goalkeeper’s legs, allowing Niccolò Fortini to roll wide from the left.
Jacopo Fazzini thought he had scored when Dodo retreated from the byline on the right, but Kakper Potulski made a stunning defensive block from six yards.
After the restart, Piccoli was again unable to take advantage of a great opportunity, as a through ball from Soum deflected off the offside trap, and his angled shot skimmed the front of the goal.
Former Udinese left-back Sylvain Widmer squandered a golden chance for Mainz to equalize by taking a fresh shot when his free-kick was not cleared effectively.

After Luca Ranieri lost the ball in midfield, Fiorentina were penalized for sluggish defending shortly after, as substitute Benedikt Hollerbach set an offside trap on a clever Jason Lee through ball and beat Martinelli one-on-one.
Dodeau’s cross was met by Moise Kean, who headed it free from seven yards out and on target. In the 81st minute, he hit a long ball over the top and into the net, but was flagged for offside in a very harsh decision.
Mainz gained momentum and Martinelli made a big save in stoppage time to deny the Vipers, but the movement continued and a cross from the left was sent in by Jason Lee, who took a glancing header to turn the game around.
