Bologna put in a heroic performance, going down to 10 men for over an hour after a controversial red card, but were unable to beat SK Blanc in a 0-0 draw.

Rosoblu have been unbeaten in all competitions since their away game against Aston Villa on September 25, and were hoping to build on their momentum in Europe with a draw against Freiburg and a win away at Steaua Bucharest. Remo Freuler and Ciro Immobile were absent due to injury, while Lorenzo De Silvestri, Ibrahim Slemana and Benjamin Dominguez were ineligible. Vincenzo Italiano returned to the touchline after a week in hospital with pneumonia. Norway’s SK Brann lost to Lille, then defeated FC Utrecht and Glasgow Rangers. Noah Holm, Felix Horn Maile, Sever Atli Magnusson, Jonas Torsvik, Sacarias Opsahl and Niklas Jensen Vasberg did not take part in the expedition.

See how it all unfolded in our live blog.

Mathisen forced the loose ball wide after a scramble, while Federico Bernardeschi retreated from the byline, rousing the panicked defenders inside the six-yard box.

The match took a turn when the referee deemed Charampos Lykogiannis’ tackle on Kornvig to be of sufficient level to warrant a straight red card. It looked pretty tough as both sides stumbled in the challenge and lost their balance, but Bologna were reduced to 10 men.

The tension in the stadium was palpable as Emile Holm decisively blocked Finne, but Juan Miranda appeared to have simply missed his opponent and his penalty appeal was rejected. Seeing that Kornig’s attack was greatly deflected, Bran countered with the same move.

Federico Bernardeschi’s curler went wide, and after the break Torbjorn Heggem’s header was deflected but was thrown off balance by the rebound.

The Rossoblu, now down to 10 men, continued their onslaught in the second half, with Santiago Castro testing the goalkeeper after Bernardeschi’s corner corner, and De Lobe converting Cambiaghi’s shot.

There was some confusion in the corner as Lewis Ferguson’s shot hit Castro, who turned wide, but then Cambiaghi should have scored with a shot from the edge of the box to lay off Castro.

Dragness also fired his gun and wasted Bran’s chance, but there was no way he could say there were only 10 hosts.

In the closing stages of the game, the team moved forward with great force, and they had an unusual double chance when Riccardo Orsolini pulled back from the line and Ferguson forced a big save, and Jens Odgaard’s rebound was deflected.

In the resulting corner kick, John Rukumi’s header was deflected off the base of the uprights with his fingertips, and Kornwig’s diving header risked an own goal.
