Nicolo Zaniolo scored his third goal in four games as Udinese suffered their first defeat in Serie A this season against Atalanta, who had drawn five.

La Dea were the only unbeaten team in Serie A this season, but have lost five straight in this competition and remain in ninth place. Marten de Roon, Daniel Maldini, Sead Kolasinac, Giorgio Scalvini and Mitchell Bakker were absent, but Lazar Samardzic played against his old club and Gianluca Scamacca returned to the starting lineup. Friulani lost 3-1 to Juventus in midweek, during which Keiynan Davies joined Thomas Christensen on the treatment table.

See how it all unfolded in our live blog.

Zaniolo struck Marco Carnesecchi’s glove with a powerful strike from distance, and Nicolò Beltola made a decisive tackle as Kamardine Slemana tried to pull the trigger from seven yards out.

Atalanta found the back of the net in the 23rd minute with a full volley from Sulemana, but Davide Zappacosta was ruled offside before he could cross.

Instead, Udinese took the lead. Jürgen Eckelenkamp’s dimpled pass sent Kamara to the left, retreating from the byline and Zaniolo opened the scoring with an inside left foot from 12 yards. This was his third goal in his last four games.

It was almost 2-0 before half-time, but Carnesecchi fingered Jesper Karlström’s screamer from the top corner from long range.

Kabasele made a decisive challenge to prevent substitute Nikola Krstovic from sweeping in with an assist from Davide Zappacosta from nine yards.

Vacun Bayo fired from a difficult angle, but in the 81st minute Raul Belanova’s sensational volley from a punching corner looked to have leveled the score, but was denied by Arthur Atta’s goal-line clearance.
