Luciano Spalletti has confirmed he will be resigning from his role as head coach of the Italian national team, but he failed to achieve it until the end of Sunday’s press conference after frustrating a line of questions from reporters.
Sparetti confirmed on Monday that he will quit his position as CT for the Italian national team after World Cup qualifiers against Moldova.
CT revealed that he was already informed that he would be let go, but instead decided to terminate his contract after the Moldova match.
The news is just two days after a humiliating 3-0 defeat against Norway. This already complicates the journey to World Cup qualifying, with Italy nine points away from the top of Group I after one match.
That’s all that Sparetti had to say at his previous eventful press conference on Sunday.
All Sparetti said at their latest Italian press conference
“We spoke last night and they told me I would be relieved of my position as the head coach of the national team,” Spalletti said at a pre-game press conference on Sunday, reporting. Sky Sports Italy.
“Sorry, given the relationship we have, I wasn’t going to give up,” he continued.
“I would have preferred to stay and work, especially when things weren’t going well, but if it was exoneration, I have to accept it. I’ve always seen this role as a service to my hometown.
“I think it’s right to find the best. I’m ending my contract. I’ll be there against Moldova tomorrow night. I’ve always been claiming my players are strong.
“I love this shirt, this job, and the players I coached. I’ll ask them to give them what they asked, even if they can’t show them the best.”
Sparetti’s greatest regret during his tenure in Italy
When asked what hurts the most after his decision to quit his job as head coach in Italy, Sparetti replied.
“I knew there were difficult times when I accepted my job. I didn’t succeed. I found the journalist to be kind to your commentary. I probably deserved worse. It caused problems with the outcome.”
Sparetti is then asked if there is anything that will change if he can go back in time. “I don’t know either. I was sure I wouldn’t be going for a walk around the park, but I was sure I would still reach the World Cup.
“My world won’t collapse when I lose the game. There’s a place between my vision and acceptance of the outcome, but these are powerful players so they’re way below the level that you need. Thinking about the past is a waste of time. You can’t influence the past.
Sparetti on Italian players’ relationship with Serie A club
Reporters then suggested that Sparetti isn’t always with all players, and he replied: “If you can’t find a relationship, please give me your name and last name.
“We need to tackle the sense of belonging and joy of the national team. We’ve always been there for embrace and understanding. After the Euro, we tried to be more “friendly” with players without obsession.
“I didn’t want to end up with a good game in other night situations. I’ve always told the boys that I deserve to go to the World Cup. I had complications, but now I was hoping they would show that they were still the right people.”
And what did Spalletti say in his meeting with President Figc Gabriele Gravina? “I would have been continuing with this group. There are reviews on how we got to these games. Many players were exhausted at the end of the season. We weren’t in the best form. But they’re my players.
Spalletti was also asked about his relationship with the Serie A club while in charge of the national team.
He replied. “I always knew I had the greatest availability and understanding when I spoke to my manager. I don’t remember having certain issues. From my perspective, I didn’t think it would do much harm.
“If there’s a problem, look at the doctor and listen. If you then use it as a trick to not come to the national team, I recommend not returning to Azuri again.
Substanti is then asked if he feels betrayed, and what condition he is out of, at which point the head coach, visibly tired and irritated, stood up and left the press conference.
