Luciano Spalletti is currently in charge of the final training session for the Italian national team following the announcement that he will be resigning after Monday’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova.
This is a reminder of how Sparetti’s time will end and what will happen next.
Sparetti confirms Italy’s departure at a press conference
Two days after the campaign’s disastrous 3-0 defeat to Norway in Italy’s first World Cup qualifier, Spalletti announced at a pre-match press conference that he would quit his position as head coach of the national team.

Spalletti told the press that FIGC President Gabriele Gravina informed him that he would be rejected, but the coach indicated he would resign after Moldova’s match on Monday night.
This news comes in the aftermath of Norway’s losses of 3-0. This has already thrown the spanner into the work as he has already scored nine points from the top of Qualification Group I, which is required to earn automatic qualifications for the 2026 World Cup.
Spalletti also oversaw a very overwhelming Euro 2024 campaign, resulting in a 16-inning end after a 2-0 defeat to Switzerland became inactive.
After the 2024 Euro, which included victory in France, Israel and Belgium, Italy finished the group in second place, then lost on two feet by Germany in the quarter final.
Italy, which includes the German quarterfinals and Norway’s losses, has been portrayed twice from three international matches so far in 2025, losing twice.
What happens next in Sparetti and Italy?

Spalletti is currently leading the final training session for the Italian national team, preparing the team for the second World Cup qualifiers of 2026, which will be held in the soil of his home against Moldova on Monday night.
Sparetti confirmed that he will be with the team at Mapay Stadium on Monday night and will negotiate the terms of the exit at the fic soon after.
Once his contract termination is complete, Spalletti will once again be free and explore opportunities elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Italy is currently looking for a new head coach to guide their team into the 2026 World Cup.
According to a report on Sunday, Stefano Pioli and Claudio Ranieri are at the forefront of their work, with the former claiming to be a more “workable” option now.
