Inter’s Lautaro Martínez was omitted in favor of Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez as reigning champions Argentina prepare to face Egypt in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday night.
The final round of 16 matches of the 2026 World Cup will be held on Tuesday night, starting with Argentina vs. Egypt at 17:00 BST and ending with Switzerland vs. Colombia at 21:00 BST.
Argentina maintained its 100% winning record in the 2026 tournament and topped Group J with maximum nine points, defeating Cape Verde 3-2 in stoppage time in the Round of 32.
Coach Lionel Scaloni made three changes to the squad that ultimately defeated Cape Verde in their last match, most notably replacing Inter’s Martinez with Atletico’s Alvarez.
Thiago Almada and Facundo Medina were also left out of the starting XI, replaced by Nicolas Tagliafico and Leandro Paredes. Como’s Nico Paz is also included in Argentina’s reserves.
Three of Egypt’s four matches at the 2026 World Cup ended in a tie after 90 minutes. They qualified in second place in Group G with five points and needed a penalty shootout to beat Australia in the round of 32 last time out.
Mohamed Salah is Egypt’s star player for a team without a Serie A representative.
