Italian international Tonali joins Tottenham from Newcastle on 115 million

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Sandro Tonali’s move from Newcastle, calling him a “tenacious, creative and energetic midfield player”.

Premier League side Tottenham confirmed Tonali’s move from Newcastle in an official statement on Monday morning.

Over the past few weeks, multiple sources have reported that Spurs have agreed a €115 million deal with Newcastle to secure the former Milan star.

The move makes Tonali the most expensive player in Italian history, surpassing Matteo Letegui, who moved from Atalanta to Al Cadizia just one year ago for a fee of 68 million euros.

Tonali, 26, has spent the past three seasons at Newcastle, making 110 appearances in all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 10 assists.

Former Milan and Brescia star Tonali won the Serie A title with Milan in 2021-22 and won the Carabao Cup in his three years at Newcastle.

The Italian international made his first-team debut for the Azzurri in 2019, making 32 international appearances and scoring four goals.

Tottenham said in a statement: “A tenacious, creative and energetic figure in midfield, Sandro joins from Newcastle where he has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League.”

“Born in Lodi, Italy, he learned his trade in Lombardy and began his football journey with Lombardy Uno and Piacenza before joining Brescia in 2012. New head coach Roberto’s hometown club, the midfielder made his professional debut with the then Serie B team in August 2017 and enjoyed a great debut campaign, going on to win the division’s Player of the Year award. It was an honour. He said: In the 2018/19 season, he played a central role in Brescia’s promotion to Serie A.

“After three impressive seasons and 89 appearances at La Leonessa, Sandro earned a season-long loan move to Italian giants AC Milan in September 2020, where he became an integral part of the team and enjoyed his first taste of European football as the Rossoneri reached the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League.

“The following season saw his move to AC Milan become permanent, and it was a fruitful year for the Serie A side, winning their 19th Scudetto and their first since 2011. Appearing in all but two league games that season, Sandro was key to the team’s success, appearing in six games in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.”

“In the 2022/23 season, he continued to be a consistent player in midfield, appearing in the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season and starting every game as the team reached the semi-finals. He made a total of 130 appearances for AC Milan, scoring seven goals and earning countless accolades for his performances.”

“In July 2023, Sandro signed for Newcastle and scored his first goal for the club on his Premier League debut the following month. During his time on Tyneside, he made 110 appearances and scored 10 goals, helping Newcastle United win the 2025 Carabao Cup and the Magpies claim their domestic trophy after 70 years.”

“He represented Italy at the 2018 European Under-19 Championship and the 2019 European Under-21 Championship, and won his first senior cap for Italy in October 2019 in a UEFA European Championship qualifying match against Liechtenstein. To date, he has scored 32 senior caps and four goals.

“Welcome, Sandro!”

“The 26-year-old, who joined from AC Milan in the summer of 2023, leaves after winning a major silver medal with Tyneside. He played an influential role in helping the club win the Carabao Cup in March 2025 and made a further 53 appearances last season, including 11 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.”
