Modric explains milan's moves from real madrid and team number

Luka Modric in her first interview as Milan on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025.

Luka Modric revealed that he was impressed by Igli Thea’s trip to Croatia, and the Milan director explained to him the project and explains why he chose 14th place in San Siro.

Modric joined Milan on a free transfer after his contract with Real Madrid ended. The legendary midfielder has signed a one-year contract at Sanshiro.

There are photos showing Modric as a child wearing a Milan shirt, which was the starting point for the first official interview with the club’s official website.

“The pictures look amazing. I was watching a lot of Italian leagues grow. Milan was my favorite team,” Modric said.

“At the time, we in Croatia followed Milan because they had Boban, one of the most popular clubs in the world and my idol. Now I’m very happy to be here.

Why did he choose Milan?

“I wanted to stay in Europe and continue to play competitive football. There were other offers, but when Milan showed up, it was clear to me,” Modrick replied.

“I was aiming for it from the first moment. I was also impressed by the fact that the sports director Thea came to Croatia to present the Milan project to me. It was important to show how much they wanted me. Milan can’t be satisfied with the average.

What will he do when he enters Rossonelli’s dressing room?

“First of all, I have a lot of respect for everyone, including the players, the coaches, the club in general,” he said.

“I want to take you there, I want to help my teammates in all respects and work hard to get my place on the team. There’s nothing easy in life. You have to work hard and fight.”

What is his view on Serie A?

“I’ve seen Italian football a lot. I’ve been a very competitive league, especially last year. I’m growing again. I’ve mainly got a lot of Croatian players playing in Italy. I’m always following national teammates. I have great teams, good players. It’s a very tactical and physical league.”

The 39-year-old won the Champions League six times in Real Madrid and reached the 2018 World Cup final. What is the secret behind his longevity?

“I always say that love is the most important thing to me. It’s love for the game and soccer,” he replied.

“This is something I still have and push me forward. Work hard, be the best, prepare yourself best. Live a healthy life with your family. There are no secrets. There are many aspects. The way you see it is your passion and love for soccer

“And also the fact that I work hard, prepare myself to be at my best, and live a healthy life. There’s no big secret, but for me, the most important thing is my passion and love for football.”

Croatia International also explained why they chose Team No. 14 at Sansilo.

“I like this number. I know in Milan, No. 10 is filmed by a great player like Leao,” he said.

“He (Leao) is Milan’s present and future. No. 10 was not available so I had to choose another one. I liked it so I wore No. 14.

“I have achieved more goals than I ever expected. I am pleased and grateful for what I have achieved. I am never satisfied. I always want more, especially professionally. When you win, you always want to repeat it.

“Outside of football, I accomplished everything. I have a beautiful family, a wife and three children. That’s the most important thing for me. I don’t need anything else.

“Along with my wife, I just want to convey important values to my children. To be respectful and humble, just as my parents taught me and my sisters. That’s what I have and I’m so happy and grateful for it.”

Finally, Modric sent a message to Milan fans.

“I’m so happy to be in a great club like Milan and look forward to seeing you all at San Silo,” he concluded.

“Hopefully we will make you happy and give you many wonderful moments this year, making you proud to celebrate your victory together. Forza Milan!”
